Eagle Falls +
Lake Tahoe, California
I stood there, camera in hand, admiring the perfect shot I had just captured. Confidence surged through me as I prepped to reposition myself for another angle. I decided to take a leap of faith, quite literally, onto what I believed was solid rock.
In my bravado, I launched myself onto what turned out to be a deceptive patch of pine needles masking a rather ominous hole. My foot landed with a slip that sent me careening toward the edge of a sudden drop-off.
Just as I realized the precariousness of my situation, I grabbed onto a nearby root, my savior from an untimely tumble. There I hung, one foot in a hole, the other still planted firmly (and rather cluelessly) atop the pine needles. My heart raced. I couldn’t tell if I was more relieved to have dodged a dramatic fall or irritated at my apparent lack of coordination.
Once I composed myself, I laughed at the absurdity of it all. Nature 1, Jeffrey 0. I made a mental note for my next shoot: double-check your landing zone before attempting any aerial maneuvers. If nothing else, I had a new story to accompany my landscape masterpiece.
