I spent hours photographing this heron on Netarts Bay, beginning before dawn and staying well into the daylight. He kept to a small stretch of shore, moving slowly and deliberately, which gave me time to study his posture, light, and subtle behaviors. Even when my children arrived and began wrestling loudly nearby, he barely glanced their way — his attention remained on the water and, as it turned out, on me.
