Golden Gate Sunburst Location: Alabama Hills, Ca Field Notes: Canon EOS 1, 70mm 1/2 sec @ f/32 ISO 50 ____________________________________________ I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and spent over 22 years living there. I can count the amount of times I have been to the Golden Gate Bridge on one hand, most of which were when I was too young to remember. For about a month in late 2006, I had become quite interested in the California coast and spent alot of time exploring the beaches and nearby trails. The Marin Headlands particularly sparked my interest. There is not only scenic beauty but national history all around with forts and military bases found hidden in the hills. One morning, while heading from San Francisco to the north bay before sunrise. I noticed an unearthly red glow on the eastern horizon. I was disappointed when I realized what was causing this glow but it was beautiful nonetheless. When I reached the north end of the bridge I drove up the hill and pulled my truck over at this view. As the sun grew higher in the sky, the glow became more and more intense and just as the sun poked up behind the San Francisco skyline, I stopped my aperture down as small as it could go in order to create the “starburst” effect. Just as it is with most sunrises, once the sun was in the sky, the glow faded and the sky went dull.
