Clearing Summer Storm Location: Yosemite High Country, Ca Field Notes: Canon EOS 1, 17mm 1 sec @ f/22 ISO 50 ____________________________________________ If you look at successful outdoor photography, you will find that about ninety percent of the images are made during dramatic changes in weather. This was as dramatic as I have personally ever witnessed. During the summer months in the Sierra, storms can go from clear to cloudy to pouring down rain and then clear again in only a matter of hours. This particular storm formed in about a half of an hour and only dropped rain for about an hour but it was coming down hard enough to force a group of friends and I to seek shelter under nearby rocks and trees in hopes of staying dry. Being out in the rain for five minutes meant being drenched to the skin. Just as fast as the storm came in, it began to break up and leave. Lucky for me it was sunset when the storm left and as the sun dropped below the horizon, it lit up the tops of the storm clouds and gave them and the high country a beautiful yellow and orange glow. To this day I have never seen such a dramatic display of light, color and clouds. I’m often told that this photograph looks like a painting, and my only reply is, “so did the scene”.
